What is the purpose of education?
Govt need to address the issue

6 ways to change educational model. Move it forward.

What’s wrong? Forget mission statements. Reality is schools are just about exam success.

1. Change to genuine learning. Middle years is international bacc. Constant assessment. When assessed every day you learn every day. Wider hoops. Choice. Teacher chooses syllabus. Learning is about developing the learner.

2. Harkness model. Student chair in the lesson. Tables oval. Rather than telling answer, pass on responsibility to students. In oval no one in dominant position.

3. Teach philosophy.

4. Partnership. Locality. Parents. Lifelong learning. Offering evening classes. Model learning forever.

5. Holistic education. Opening hearts and minds. 8 aptitudes. Eg remote learning. 8…. Logic linguistic. Spiritual moral. Etc teaching happiness.

Service
Exercise
Appreciation
Play to strengths
Stillness
Control of life
Lifelong learning
Savouring families
Creativities and hobbies at centre of life

Put individual child at heart of education.

Should all be teaching leadership. Confidence in self and abilities. Y9 compulsory leadership programme. Learn how to lead yourself.

Teaches leadership. Growth. Development.

Internationalism. Mandarin. Enter kids for competitions.

IB. INTERNATIONAL.

Peter Hyman – unleashing potential

From Evernote:

Peter Hyman – unleashing potential

Education simply not fitting what they need. Being taught ppl value x, y and z based on exams etc. Then when leave education, then u find out what skills and qualities employers really want.

Bridge gap between what academics want and what employment and real life need.

At the heart of a great lesson is a question.

Open questions require higher order thinking.

Systems should be set to world class standards. Good at Maths EVERYWHERE.

Benchmarking levels is happening as part of the national curriculum review.

Charlie Brown example. Bet you I can teach Snoopy to sing.

Dan Roberts – change through student voice

Dan Roberts – change through student voice

  • Saltash.net school (community)
  • Vision. ICT underpinning everything they do.
  • Good with some outstanding features.
  • Like where I work. SSAT recognition for improvement.
  • Student voice…  We want to be free to use more technology. Also said, we want to learn how to learn.
  • Year 7 new curriculum come from student voice. They designed it!
  • Get mobile learning into lessons. Use their technology.
  • Students designed “Recharge the Battery” which led to the whole Chicken project. STUDENTS designing the curriculum.
  • Use of Facebook and Twitter to engage students/parents with school.
  • Now doing games based learning as transition tool. XMA code used to develop Xbox games.
  • Don’t ban kids from network. Educate students!
  • Key to success with staff is effective well curated CPD for staff via Peer support programme. See Partners in Learning site for more details.
